The biggest and most gruelling endurance challenge has hit our shores with over 80 teams of endurance athlete’s from around the globe arriving in Burnie for the start of the Adventure Racing World Championships. 750k km’s of mountain biking, running, trekking and paddling through the harshest conditions and terrain that the West Coast can throw at competitors, ain’t no soft stage race. Forget about GPS, sleep when your dead on your feet and use compass and map to find your way through untracked territory. With the course being revealed tonight, only 24 hours before the start, there will be plenty of unknown to consider.
You have the opportunity to virtually be in the race from your own lounge room with a very impressive tracking and information going LIVE yesterday track me live . They have set up a live stream to race HQ along with camera’s placed across the course, along with regular race articles and twitter updates. Even cooler is the LIVE map tracker showing the position of all teams during the race. It will be interesting to see who’s on course, and who has strayed in a less than ideal direction.
For those who are regular readers, you may remember I interviewed Michael Phillips from Muppets Adventure Racing back in June. They only Tassie team to qualify for this race and I’m sure will be looking forward to having a good race in their own backyard. Their knowledge of local weather conditions and equipment needed may be invaluable to finishing the race. Make sure you send a message of support to the Muppets by placing a trail message that will displayed at around the course.
Race HQ at ‘The Point’ in Burnie will become a hive of activity today as the registration opens along with equipment check in. There will be a LIVE feed to the race briefing at approximately 5pm tonight, which may reveal the course location. So sit back and settle in for what will be an intriguing week of racing through the Tassie wilderness.
