A quickie with Richie Porte

Hadspen’s Richie Porte is on top of the cycling world with his current form and will most likely be an important part of Bradley Wiggins general classification tilt when team SKY annouces it’s squad for the TDF.  Today Richie made himself available for a few questions courtesy of the examiner online forum “THE GRILL”.  I was lucky enough to get a few questions in……

TasEndurance-You made a lot of those other potential contenders look average up the climbs at the Dalphine. What do you credit your current form to?

Richie Porte-This year I have really concentrated on climbing, basically any day I ride this year I am out in the mountains. It’s hard work but seems to be working.

TasEndurance-How much food would you eat on a stage of a grand tour?

Richie Porte-Usually in the morning we eat a big porridge which usually keeps you going for the first hour or two. I take around 4 pieces of food which will last until the feed zone which is at the half way of each stage. There we take a bag with bars and energy gels to get us to the end. When we get back to the bus we would usually eat some rice and then a good sized meal of a night. We don’t eat ridiculously big meals

TasEndurance-What specific training do you do when you are preparing for the world champs TT?

Richie Porte-A lot of work behind a motor bike. Lots of interval work, we train a lot of power so doing high power efforts for up to an hour

TasEndurance-Who is has been your best roomy when you are on the road and why?

Richie Porte-I’ve roomed with O’Grady, Voight, Wiggins and many more..but I have to say my mate Chris Froome is the best. He’s Kenyan and has great stories!
