Beauty Point Enduro Triathlon hosted by LTC

Launceston Triathlon Club President and the busiest man in Launceston, Paul Ransom has prepared this report on the final triathlon of the season, with a difference……

Fine conditions greeted the 50 competitors in the Southern Cross Television Enduro Triathlon held on Sunday 25th March at Beauty Point.

The enduro format requires competitors to complete 2 laps of a course comprising a 300m swim, 10K bike ride and 2.5K run. All up the distance covered equates to a sprint distance triathlon but the enduro format adds extra transitions and the shorter legs encourage a higher intensity of performance which can make for a challenging but enjoyable format.

No surprises in that the overall winner was James Hodge, who has extended his unbeaten run in the Tasmanian State Series and Launceston Triathlon Club series to over 2 years. Hodgy was kept honest by Paul McKenzie who finished 2nd while Dylan Hill used his strong running skills to finish 3rd. A big improver for this year has been Melissa Clark who won the open women’s category and finished 9th overall.

The event was the last race of the season for LTC and a lighter side was introduced with a fancy dress prize for the best outfit worn in the final run leg. Competitors got into the swing of things with Tim Gunton and Millie Chapman being deserved winners.

The event was also notable for the feats of Dan Riley, who managed a spectacular fall in the transition from bike to run by catching his bare foot in the front wheel and slicing his big toe through to the bone and breaking his front wheel in the process. Unfortunately this was not captured on film!
